Champions League 2026-27 Qualifying: Third Round Preview and the Road to Madrid
The Champions League doesn't wait for August to warm up.
While Premier League clubs are still on preseason tours and Bundesliga sides are running fitness drills, 20 clubs across Europe are three days from the most important 180 minutes of their season. The third qualifying round kicks off August 4 — and the stakes are higher than most casual fans realise.
Seven spots remain in the 36-team league phase. Twenty-nine clubs are already in. The rest fight through a four-round gauntlet where one bad night means Europa League — or worse. This is the Champions League before the Champions League.
How the qualifying path works
UEFA splits qualifying into two tracks from the second round onward. The Champions path is for domestic league winners from smaller associations — Ararat-Armenia, Levski Sofia, Kauno Žalgiris. The League path is for clubs from the big five leagues who finished third or fourth — Olympiacos, Sparta Prague, Lyon.

League Path — the heavyweight division
Sparta Prague vs Lyon (Aug 4, 18:00 UTC)
This is the tie of the round. Lyon, seven-time Ligue 1 champions, shouldn't be here. A disastrous domestic campaign dropped them into qualifying. Sparta Prague won the Czech league at a canter. The Letná Stadium is a fortress — Lyon's season effectively hinges on 90 minutes in Prague.
Olympiacos vs NEC Nijmegen (Aug 4, 18:00 UTC)
Olympiacos have Champions League group stage experience. NEC don't. The Dutch side finished fourth in the Eredivisie last season — their best league finish in decades. The Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium on a European night is intimidating. NEC's kids haven't faced anything like it.
Union Saint-Gilloise vs Bodø/Glimt (Aug 4, 18:00 UTC)
Two of Europe's smartest-run clubs collide. USG nearly won the Belgian Pro League two years running. Bodø/Glimt have been punching above their weight in Europe since 2021. Both play aggressive, high-tempo football. Neither has a budget that matches their ambition. This should be the most watchable tie of the round.
Champions Path — the survivors
Dinamo Zagreb vs Kauno Žalgiris (Aug 4, 18:00 UTC)
Dinamo survived a scare against Thun — needing extra time at Maksimir to advance. Kauno Žalgiris edged KÍ Klaksvík 1–0 on aggregate. The Lithuanian champions are defensive and disciplined. Dinamo should have too much quality, but this Zagreb side hasn't looked convincing.
Crvena Zvezda vs Hapoel Be'er Sheva (Aug 4, 17:30 UTC)
After putting nine past Larne, Red Star face a sterner test. Hapoel knocked out Víkingur Reykjavík — the Icelandic champions who'd looked sharp in the first round. The Rajko Mitić Stadium will be electric. If Crvena Zvezda score early, the tie is over.
Levski Sofia vs Kairat Almaty (Aug 4, 17:30 UTC)
Levski crushed Borac 5–1 in the first round and then eliminated Universitatea Craiova. They're playing with confidence. Kairat needed penalties to survive Omonia — their journey feels borrowed. Ararat-Armenia's win over Shamrock Rovers was the most impressive result of the second round — controlling both legs against a side with European experience. Celje survived penalties against Egnatia. The Armenian champions are slight favourites at home.

Aarhus pulled off the comeback of the round against Lech Poznań. Sabah have been quietly efficient — 4–1 over The New Saints, then 3–0 over KuPS. Neither club has Champions League group stage experience. The winner makes history regardless.
Fenerbahçe vs Sturm Graz (Aug 5, 18:00 UTC)
The last tie of the round. Fenerbahçe scraped past Górnik Zabrze. Sturm Graz are flying after dismantling Hearts. The Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium gives Fenerbahçe an edge, but Sturm Graz are the sharper side right now. This could go either way.
What comes next
The play-off draw is August 3 — one day before the third round even kicks off. UEFA draws both rounds together so clubs know what's waiting. The play-offs run August 18–19 and 25–26. Win there and you're in the league phase.
The league phase draw is August 27. The first matches are September 8–10. The final is June 5, 2027 at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid. For the seven clubs that survive qualifying, that's the dream. For the rest — Europa League isn't a bad consolation, but it's not why you endure preseason in July.
