Why Do Sports Start Times Differ Between Websites?

Short answer: two websites may be showing the same event in different time zones. Differences can also come from daylight-saving changes, a page using the venue's local time, or one source receiving a schedule update before another.

1. Venue time, UTC and your local time are different

A match has one scheduled instant, but it can be written in several ways. A London kickoff may be displayed in UK local time, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), New York time or the time zone selected on your device. Always check the time-zone label beside the schedule rather than comparing the hour alone.

2. Daylight saving does not change everywhere at once

Countries start and end daylight saving on different dates, and some do not use it. Time-zone rules can also change. The IANA Time Zone Database is updated when governments change UTC offsets, boundaries or daylight-saving rules. A device or website using older time-zone data can therefore show an incorrect local conversion.

3. The event schedule may have changed

Broadcaster selections, weather, venue availability and tournament decisions can move an event after the original schedule is published. One service may already have the update while another still shows the earlier time. For a late change, confirm the event with the competition organizer, league, team or official broadcaster.

4. Date boundaries can make the event appear on another day

An evening event in the Americas may take place after midnight in Europe or Asia. This means the same event can correctly appear under different calendar dates for different users. Compare the teams, competition and venue as well as the date.

How to check the correct sports start time

  1. Confirm the teams, players and competition.
  2. Find the page's stated time zone.
  3. Select your local time zone instead of converting the hour mentally.
  4. Check the event status again shortly before kickoff or tip-off.
  5. Use the organizer or team as the final source for last-minute changes.
